What's an au pair?

The expression “au pair” comes from French and means “on mutuality”. You will experience a different way of living in a new family and foreign country, learn the language, get to know people and culture of Germany.
In countermove your support is needed. This includes child care as well as light household duties.

The job as an au pair in Germany will give you the possibility to discover the uniqueness of Germany and its people.

You will get a lot of valuable experiences from which you will benefit in your private and professional life.


What are the duties of an au pair?

The duties of an au pair are divided into child care and simple housework.

A few examples explaining your duties:

  
1.Child care:


    playing with children

    occupying the children (e.g. crafting, painting, reading something out to children)

    looking after the children

    babysitting

    washing and dressing of the children

    accompanying and fetching the children (e.g. to/from the kindergarten, school or playdates)


2.Household:


    taking care of the laundry, including ironing

    cleaning the apartment, including vacuuming, dusting and wiping

    preparing little meals


Your activities will dependent on the needs of your host family. Before you arrive in Germany, you will have the possibility to contact the family and learn more about them, their needs and your future activities.

 

Are you meeting the framework conditions as an au pair in Germany?


    30 working hours per week, max. 6 hours per day

    It is required for you to take German lessons in order to improve your level of the German language

    Babysitting on 1-2 evenings/week could be necessary

    Be a responsible and lovely associate with your host children

  

What can you expect being an au pair in Germany?


    You earn 260 € pocket money/month

    You are entitled to 4 weeks of paid vacation for a one-year stay OR 2 days for a one-month stay

    You will have free room and board (own room and food)

    You will be covered with social insurance such as health, accident and liability insurance

    The family will integrate you as a family member

    You get a monthly ticket for the local transportation system

    You are entitled to one day off/week (min. one Sunday per month)

    The family will pay an one-way flight ticket to Germany for you IF you stay more than 6 months
